Spontaneous Gestures in L2 Naturalistic Spontaneous Interaction: Effects of Language Proficiency

Gestures produced by language learners have a positive impact on interactions; however, few studies examined natural conversation data focusing learner’s spoken proficiency level. This study investigates gesture use among of English as second with varying levels (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) to determine whether type (e.g., iconic, deictic, metaphoric, beat gestures) differ 17 video-recorded dyadic interactions in consisting mixed-level same-level pairs. Quantitative analysis followed data-driven approach demonstrated that more advanced employed gestures speech frequently than other groups. During interactions, iconic were used often the beginner group, while deictic group. Moreover, function each group during appeared be qualitatively varied. These results indicate may relate learners’ profi ciency levels. has revealed significant differences levels, providing insights into cognition process verbal communication.
